Viewers accuse Remainers of hijacking the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms as sea of EU flags replace Union Jacks in the crowd after anti Brexit campaigners delivered thousands to the Royal Albert Hall

Viewers of the Last Night Of The Proms last night were up in arms after thousands of EU flags were spotted in the crowd after anti Brexit campaigners delivered thousands of them to the Royal Albert Hall. 

As the classical music series drew to a close, audience members in the historic venue brought out the blue and yellow flags during a rendition of Rule Britannia, a traditionally patriotic song.

Flags have long been an integral part of the Proms, with the final concert showcasing traditional British orchestral anthems – and some audience members using the night to demonstrate their political ideology.

Among the hundreds of Union Jack and other international flags, the EU emblem dominated TV screens as the crowd joined in with the BBC Symphony Orchestra to belt out: ‘Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never will be slaves.’

Some audience members could also be seen in EU patterned suits and berets. 

 Prior to the concert, campaigners handed out thousands of EU flags. This appearance of remainers has also taken place in previous years.   

A mixed reaction later ensued on X, formerly known as Twitter, with many viewers claiming Remainers were hijacking the event, which has been running since 1895. 

Former Conservative MP Harvey Proctor wrote: ‘BBC must investigate how so many EU flags were waved & on display at The Last Night of the Proms. 

‘Disgraceful & misguided BBC messing up a British tradition; a political gesture which would make Sir Henry Wood turn in his grave. Utterly vulgar & wrong. Rule Britannia, not Rule EU!’

Another viewer said: ‘How does Rule Brittania sit with an EU Flag? I’d love to hear a Re-moaner try and explain.’ 

A third said: ‘How can you sing Rule Brittania while waving a flag of a foreign political cabal.’ 

A fourth said: ‘People at the Last night of the Proms singing Rule Brittania and waving EU flags. A whole boatload of irony.’ 

Others appeared delighted at the sight with one saying: ‘What a wonderful evening. Hearing Rule Brittania sung by a Norwegian, the wonderful British BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by an American. As well as the many flags being waved by the patriotic audience.’

Another said: ‘It’s amazing how at The last night of the proms, right in the middle of ‘Rule Britannia’ [there were] so many EU flags waiving.’ 

In a statement to MailOnline, a BBC spokesperson said: ‘Audiences choose to bring their own flags, and the Royal Albert Hall specify size limitations within their guidelines for safety reasons.’
