Based in Near Sawrey, close to Hawkshead, Hattie crafted a three flask lined container, with shot glass tray, which outshone all competition entries.
The pre-made competition challenged entrants to display their dexterity by fabricating a leather case to house an everyday item.
There was no restriction on colour, thread, or stitching, with the only limitation being that it should fit in a Royal Mail Small Parcel (45cm x 35cm x 16cm).
Hattie’s flask case, decorated intricately with acorns, oak leaves, and featuring a box stitched acorn on the lid, is handmade, paying homage to traditional heritage techniques.
This was Hattie’s first creation post-shoulder reconstruction surgery in May.
Her creation took her an afternoon to complete just the acorn.
Hattie said: “The Society put on this competition to showcase the amazing and diverse talents of members of the Society of Master Saddlers. At a time when so much is mass produced by machine it is vital that the traditional heritage techniques are not lost. “I hand made a three-flask lined container, with shot glass tray. The outside was decorated with acorns and oak leaves, with a leather acorn on the lid. “The work is all done by hand including the stitching, which is known as box stitching. “This was the first item I have made since having shoulder reconstruction surgery at the end of May which made this win even more special. “The acorn alone took a whole afternoon to complete. ”
The flask will be exhibited at Saddler Hall, London in preparation for next year’s National Saddlery Competition, where Hattie hopes to showcase her talent again.
Hattie is gearing up for her final exam to become a Qualified Society of Master Saddlers Saddler.
