‘Farcical!’ Could King Charles be forced to give Harry a new home? Watch our royal talk show Palace Confidential for the latestPrince Harry’s continued role as Counsellor of State has created the extraordinary debate over whether he needs to be given a royal residence to fulfil the constitutional requirements of the role. For the Daily Mail’s Diary Editor Richard Eden, the row highlights the need to remove the position – which allows him to stand in for his father in constitutional matters – from the King’s youngest son.

‘The situation is crazy,’ he tells Palace Confidential. ‘When you say “we’re not going to our job any more”, you lose the perks that come with that job, it makes sense. So why on earth should they be trying to find any royal residence for them now? There’s a simple answer: he needs to be cut out as Counsellor of State. ‘He should stay at a hotel, same as everyone else. There’s no need for him to stay at a royal residence when he essentially has nothing to do with the Royal Family anymore.’

The paper’s Royal Editor Rebecca English agrees that the situation is ‘farcical’, but says that the family are reluctant to remove the role from Harry. ‘The feeling is for it to be taken away from him might be seen as a low-blow, he’s had a lot taken from him over the last couple of years. Many people would say rightly so,’ she tells the programme. ‘I agree with Richard, it’s a very unsatisfactory state of affairs and I cannot see how he, the Duke of York and Princess Beatrice, none of them are working royals why on earth they should be able to make decisions, or support the king in that really formal constitutional way. It just seems farcical.’
