“It was believed he could take them to West Suffolk Hospital sooner than the ambulance could get there,” he said.

Officers followed the lorry to hospital and the ambulance service was stood down.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was later that evening called by a member of the public who spotted the car.

A spokeswoman said they were under the impression it was a water rescue.

It was soon realised there was no-one in the car and the fire service was not required.
