The contest was organised by family firm Lake District Estates and the Cumbria Community Foundation, in an effort to locate individuals making a difference in their community.
Villagers in Moor Row cast their votes for ‘exceptional’ postman Garry Walker, describing him as ‘friendly, helpful and efficient’.
Mr Walker was celebrated for his social contributions beyond postal services.
Residents have praised him for checking in with elderly and vulnerable neighbours, actively supporting local businesses, and for showing concern if something looks ‘out of the ordinary’.
A ceremony honouring Mr Walker took place at Moor Row Primary School, with attendees including school children and staff, members of the community, and some of his Royal Mail colleagues.
At this presentation, the villagers who had nominated Mr Walker congratulated him and thanked him personally.
Mr Walker said: “I just want to thank everybody for nominating me.
“I can’t believe it to be honest and I just didn’t expect this.
“Thank you!”
Georgina Townsend of Lake District Estates said: “We know many people work selflessly to make Cumbria a better place and that’s why we launched this competition to find an unsung community hero.
“We are thrilled to give this special prize to Garry, who was chosen as the lucky winner by our judging panel.
“We’re a family-run firm ourselves and really wanted to honour an individual who makes a true difference in their local community.
“Congratulations Garry!”
As the crowned community hero, Mr Walker was awarded a ‘Cream Tea on the Move’ experience for two.
He will enjoy a cream tea aboard the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway while journeying through the Western Lake District’s scenery.
The elegant Directors’ Saloon carriage named ‘Ruth, with its luxurious seating, will cater to his trip.
