111-year-old man takes title of World’s Oldest Man, Guinness World Records says

(Gray News) – Guinness World Records says a man in the U.K. is now the oldest man in the world.

According to a news release Friday, John Tinniswood, aged 111 years and 222 days old, was verified as the oldest living man on Thursday.

GWR says Tinniswood now holds the title after the passing of Juan Vicente Pérez of Venezuela, who was 114 years old. He died on Tuesday.

Tinniswood was born in Liverpool on Aug. 26, 1912, and now resides in a care home in Southport, Merseyside, U.K.

GWR met Tinniswood at his care home on Thursday to present him with his certificate.

“Doesn’t make any difference to me. Not at all. I accept it for what it is,” Tinniswood said GWR showed up.

He said the secret to his long life is “just luck,” saying, “You either live long or you live short, and you can’t do much about it.”

Tinniswood said he doesn’t credit any lifestyle choices or diets to his longevity. He said he just eats what is given to him at his care home, just like everyone else.

He enjoys his favorite meal – fish and chips – every Friday.

According to the GWR news release, Tinniswood met his wife during World War II and married her in 1942. They have one daughter who was born in 1943.

Tinniswood retired in 1942 and his wife died in 1986. He previously had careers in the Royal Mail service and as an accountant for Shell and BP.

He said the world is always changing, but he believes it is changing for the better.

“It’s a sort of ongoing experience … it’s getting a little better but not all that much yet. It’s going the right way,” he said.

Tinniswood still has a while to go if he wants to become the oldest living person in the world. That title belongs to a woman: Maria Branyas Morera, of Spain. She recently turned 117.

The oldest man to ever live was Jiroemon Kimura from Japan, who died in 2013 at age 116 years and 54 days.
