NEW INITIATIVES INTRODUCED TO HELP COACH PARKING IN HORNSEA

Following an increase in visitors arriving by bus and coach in Hornsea in recent years, East Riding of Yorkshire Council has announced a new collaboration with Hornsea Freeport, aimed at improving parking.

A section of the large parking facility at Hornsea Freeport has now been allocated for buses and coaches. The Freeport is located 1.5 miles from Hornsea town centre, and has restroom facilities available for drivers’ convenience.

New signage will guide coach drivers to the Freeport. In addition, the council is to implement an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order, which will designate one of the five bus/coach parking bays in Hornsea on Parva Road as a drop-off bay, allowing drivers to unload and pick up passengers safely before they go to park in the Freeport parking area.

Coaches will be able to remain in the space for up to 20 minutes. The order will be in effect for 18 months.

There will be an opportunity to comment on the scheme within the first six months, and any comments received will guide any necessary adjustments or amendments to the order.

After thorough evaluation of the scheme, a decision will be made as to whether it should be made permanent.

Councillor Barbara Jefferson, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Cabinet member for heritage and coastal, said: “This is very welcome news indeed, and should help alleviate the issues in Hornsea for coach parking.

“We also acknowledge that similar challenges exist in Mappleton, but there is no formal coach park or appropriate drop-off point available.

“We are, however, installing directional signage to encourage coaches to also park at Hornsea Freeport.  We have written to all coach operators to advise them of these new initiatives, and I look forward to a successful summer season in Hornsea, welcoming tourists to this lovely part of the East Riding coast.”
