TSSA calls for government action over Royal Mail freight decision

Transport and travel union TSSA has called on the government to help reverse Royal Mail’s decision to stop using trains transporting post. 

The company has confirmed that its remaining freight trains will come out of service in October, leading to a sharp increase in the amount of mail moved on the roads.  

DB Cargo – which runs the services – accused Royal Mail of a U-turn, having previously committed to increasing the use of freight in order to meet net zero targets by 2040. 

TSSA represents members across DB Cargo and has long advocated for greater use of rail freight as a means of combatting the climate crisis. 

Commenting, TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust, said: “Royal Mail’s planned withdrawal from freight is wholly short-sighted and comes at a time when there is a pressing need for more rail freight. 

“Our members at DB Cargo are very worried about what this sudden change in stance by Royal Mail means for them. I want to assure them we are doing all we can to bring clarity to the situation. 

“It’s vital now that the Labour government steps in to and helps to reverse this foolish decision. We are ready and willing to work closely with the Transport Secretary and her team in order to preserve these vital rail services.”
