Flypast over Oxfordshire as Royal International Air Tattoo starts

The event at RAF Fairford starts today with hundreds of planes set to fly over Oxfordshire.

The Royal Canadian Air Force’s CF-18 Hornet displayed its agility on its way to the event.

The Mach Loop is a series of valleys in west-central Wales used for low level training for fast aircraft.

It is among the few places in the world where photographers can see combat aircraft flying below them.

This year’s event is bigger than ever with a spectacular display of aircraft meaning the skies will be busy over RAF Brize Norton where air traffic control is based.

To kick start RIAT, the sky will come alive with a multinational flypast consisting of 16 aircraft from 16 nations today (Friday July 19).

The show is considered the aviation event of the year.

A statement from RAF Brize Norton on Friday morning said: “Today, The Royal International Air Tattoo will celebrate 75 years of NATO with a 16 aircraft multinational flypast.

“To enable so many aircraft to safely conduct such activity requires holding patterns, allowing formation participants to assemble in the sky.

“There will be two holds in use between 11.55pm and 12.25pm today.

“The northern hold is in the vicinity of Brize Norton, Carterton and Witney.

“The southern hold is in the vicinity of Faringdon. There may be increased noise during this time and we thank you for your understanding.”
