Xander Schauffele has warned his rivals he can take his major-winning form to another level after an epic display at Royal Troon.
The manner in which Schauffele moved away from the field in the closing stages of the Open on Sunday confirmed he is currently the world’s best, a faultless back nine characterised by impeccable putting under pressure.
Schauffele became the first player since Brooks Koepka in 2018 to win two majors in a calendar year, adding the Open title to May’s breakthrough triumph in the US PGA.
And he revels in the fact he is seen as laidback, which belies a fierce determination to win.
Schauffele, 30, jumped up to second in the world rankings behind Scottie Scheffler following his triumph at Troon but that only tells him there are still areas in his game that need work.

‘If you look hard enough, you can always find improvement,’ said Schauffele. ‘When you feel like you need an extra kick in the butt, there are easy ways to motivate yourself.
‘There’s still a lot of things I’d like to do in my career, and this is a very big leap towards that.
‘The fire is still burning, maybe brighter than ever before.’
