Lidl worker convicted over involvement in £316,000 gold bullion scam

A supermarket worker has been convicted of his involvement in a £316,000 gold bullion scam.

Michael Sajid, 38, was sent a package after a woman of 84 was duped into posting it.

But he told police he was working shifts at Lidl when deliveries were made.

Sajid was found guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court of taking part with others in possessing criminal property – a gold bar weighing more than 2lb – in 2020.

The woman made three separate purchases totalling seven bars of gold bullion worth £316,272 between May and July 2020.

She sent six packages between those dates via Royal Mail special delivery to a Glasgow City Council flat where Sajid lived.

The OAP, then caring for her husband, was called by a scammer claiming to be from the Financial Conduct Authority.

He claimed she had made a fraudulent purchase on Amazon and persuaded her to move all her investments into another account.

The scammers then told her to buy the gold bars.

Dad-of-four Sajid was further convicted of allowing his former home in Thornliebank, near Glasgow, to be used for the delivery of the gold.

Sajid, now of Glasgow’s Govanhill, will be sentenced next month.
