Beaconsfield Royal Mail post lady, June Sanderson, retires

June Sanderson started working at the Royal Mail sorting office in Beaconsfield on November 3, 1980, delivering letters and parcels in the surrounding area. On Saturday, August 31, she left her post as a post lady for a well-deserved retirement.

Ms Sanderson, 65, said: “I loved the job, but I’m glad to retire.

“I’ve loved doing it but I’m 65 right now, so I’m looking forward to a break.”

Long-serving member of the team at the Beaconsfield Royal Mail Sorting Office on Station Road, June Sanderson had built a stellar reputation in the community who gave her cards, gifts, and even held parties in honour of her retirement.

She said: “It’s embarrassing, of course, because you feel like you’re just doing your job.

“But I’ve known my customers for such a long time, doing that route for 20 years.

“I’ve had so many cards and gifts from all of my customers along my route.

“You feel touched getting this recognition from people. They’ve really appreciated me, which is a lovely feeling.”

Parties were held for June at Coppersfields and Brownswood Road, which were both on June’s route for 20 years.

Shan Thornham, a resident of Coppersfields, said they wanted to give a special thanks to June for “being so happy and cheerful, whatever the weather, and sent our love and best wishes for a very happy retirement.”

Ms Thornham, added: “June is so kind to everyone, has time for everyone, and has just been fantastic really.”

Jayne Standish, a resident of Brownswood Road, added: “After 44 years delivering the mail, June the Post Lady completes her final round.

“During that time, it is estimated that June walked a distance equivalent to 3 times around the world!

“She knew everybody and everybody knew her.

“Not surprisingly almost the entire road turned out to wish her a long and well deserved retirement.”

Richard McMahon said a few kind words in June’s honour at the party in Copperfields on Saturday as well.

June Sanderson expressed her sincere thanks to every one of her customers, and said: “Thank you for appreciating me and being so kind.”

When asked what her plans are for retirement, June explained: “I’m just going to take retirement as it comes.”
