The fairytale-like town unchanged by time and known as ‘Queen of the Cotswolds’

Painswick, often dubbed “The Queen of the Cotswolds”, is a gem tucked away in the region and makes for a perfect day out.

This charming village stands as one of the most well-preserved spots in the Cotswolds, having retained its enchanting character over the years, all while being surrounded by breathtaking rural landscapes.

Its slender streets are home to England’s oldest operational Post Office and the country’s most historic bowling green. Visitors should not miss the opportunity to explore St Mary’s church, encircled by 99 yew trees, creating one of the most unique churchyards in England.

The medieval church is renowned for its tower housing 14 bells and features more than 300 intricately embroidered kneelers depicting scenes from the Bible, according to the Express.

A highlight of Painswick is the Rococo Garden, originally designed in the 1740s for the leisure of an English gentleman and now the sole remaining rococo garden in England. Since 1984, it has undergone restoration to become a splendidly kept garden, rescued from neglect, reports the Mirror.

For those keen on hiking, the Cotswolds Way National Trail is highly recommended. For the more adventurous, the trail stretches all the way to Chipping Camden and even to the historic city of Bath.

Painswick, which is about two hours from Leicester, could be the perfect destination for a weekend break. The closest train station can be found in Stroud.
