Royal fans have been left in stitches after photos emerged of Queen Mary of Denmark tucking into an Amazonian delicacy – before realising what she’s about ti eat.

In footage shared from the royal’s tour of Brazil which saw her visit the Amazon town of Manaus, the Queen sits down for an indigenous meal and looks eager to try it. 

However, the mother-of-four, 52, looked surprised and slightly apprehensive after she was shown a picture of the traditional dish about to served for lunch at the Biatuwi restaurant – made of insects. 

The Danish royal took part in an official four day visit to the South American nation last week, where she met with the Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard to focus on ‘Danish-Brazilian cooperation on biodiversity, health and the fight against violence against women’. 

After the hilarious clip of Mary at lunch was posted on a fan page for the Danish Queen, fans were left in hysterics and joked they’d have reacted in exactly the same way.

In the video, Mary can be seen peering into a bowl place in front of her. Unsure of what she was about to munch on, the Dane was then shown a picture of the delicacy by a neighbour at the restaurant.

Zooming in on a picture of the dish, the Dane’s face drops much to the amusement of the person filming, who chuckles knowingly at the look on Mary’s face.

Mary laughed nervously as she took in the news that she was about to have insect for lunch. 

Then, in royally polite fashion, the queen pulls her surprised look into a look of animation, smiling sweetly as though excited for the insect lunch.

After the footage was posted on Instagram fan account @denmarksqueenmary, fans joked they would have done the same thing in the Queen’s position.

One person wrote: ‘Oh I love this! It would be exactly my reaction.’

Queen Mary travelled to Brazil last week for a four day state visit, leaving behind her husband, King Frederik X of Denmark, 56.

During the trip, she visited Manaus, which is known as one of the most dangerous cities in the world. 

On Thursday, Mary visited the National Institute for Amazon Research, where she had the chance to meet a rescued manatee calf, which she had the opportunity to feed.

The queen looked spectacular in a stylish Sandro dress as she was pictured stroking and feeding the manatee.

She wore her glossy brunette tresses down at her shoulders and wore soft by glamorous makeup, accentuating her bright eyes and flawless skin.

Mary donned a pair of long dangling earrings which featured orange jewels and a teal droplet. 

In an Instagram post reflecting on the event, the royal family wrote: ‘The animal and plant life of the Amazon forest is something very special. About ten percent of the world’s total biodiversity belongs right there, and yesterday Her Majesty the Queen got insights into the diverse life of the area.’ 

On the jam packed Thursday, Mary also visited the Center for Bioeconomy, shortly before she was taken the the local indigenous restaurant where she was prevented with the unusual insect meal.

On Wednesday on her trip, Mary appeared effortlessly elegant as she visited the Amazon Museum MUSA at the Adolpho Ducke forest reserve – and later visited the Teatro Amazonas.

The Queen basked in the sunlight while at the observation tower from the museum, sporting a chic yet practical button-up with trousers.

Mary donned a sage green shirt, the perfect ensemble for an active outing in nature, with brown cargos.

She kept her make-up light, accessorising with a pair of sunglasses, and styling her brunette tresses in a braid.

Elsewhere, the royal looked to enjoyed a boat trip on the Amazon river.

Later in the evening, Mary swapped over for a glamorous look for a visit to the Teatro Amazonas.

She was effortlessly elegant in a striking magenta top and patterned green skirt, teamed with a colourful yellow clutch.

The mother-of-four wore her brown hair down in structured curls, and accentuated her visage with red lipstick.

There, she signed a guestbook and received a model of the theatre as a gift. During her trip, the Queen will also make her way to the capital, Brasilia.

She is also set to visit the Cerrado – the Brazilian savannah – and meet with the United Nations Environmental Programme, UNEP, which she is a patron of.

During the four day trip, Mary split her time between Manaus and Brasília – visiting the Presidential Palace at the latter.
