Man’s knife threat forces teenager in Derby to hand over mobile phone

A Derby man has been convicted after he threatened a 15-year-old boy and stole his mobile phone. Keiron Birks approached the teenager in Osmaston Park Road, Derby on March 27 this and accused him of stealing a phone belonging to one of Birks’ friends.

He then threatened the boy with violence and said that his ‘friend’ was coming down and had a knife on him – causing the boy to hand over his own mobile. On April 8, Birks broke into a car in Marlborough Road, Allenton and stole a wallet, sunglasses, and a vape.

He then went on to use bank cards from the wallet to buy goods at a McDonalds and a service station. Birks, of Victory Road, Derby, was arrested later that day and was found in possession of cocaine and cannabis, he also attempted to escape from officers after his arrest.

The 24-year-old was charged on April 9 and remanded into police custody, to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court the following morning. A magistrate further remanded Birks into prison custody on 10 April.

Birks later admitted nine offences including theft, blackmail, possession of drugs, fraud, and escape from lawful custody. A judge ordered him to serve 18 months in prison at a hearing on September 26, at Derby Crown Court.
