Harwich has five new Royal Mail posties as ‘poor service’ improves

The town council and MP Sir Bernard Jenkin contacted Royal Mail in July about the town’s poor postal service.

One day this year Harwich was identified as one of the six “most impacted” offices in the country.

In response, Royal Mail said deliveries in Harwich in the summer were taking place “at least every other day to maximise delivery frequency” and that they were working to improve the service over the coming weeks – including using any “additional resource”.

Five new posties were confirmed for the town in September, which Harwich councillor Garry Calver said fitted what he was being told that services were getting better.

Mr Calver said: “All the feedback I am getting is that things are improving, which is welcome news.”

Councillor Louise Armstrong said she had received post every day for a week, and neighbours had said the service had improved.

Ms Armstrong said: “We see two people out every day now, where it used to be none.”

Harwich Town Council says it will continue to monitor the situation.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Over the past few weeks, the situation in Harwich has improved.

“The local service was impacted by a high level of staff sickness and vacancies. We have since hired five new posties and aim to reach full staffing levels shortly.

“To ensure a more consistent service, we have made changes to delivery rounds to improve the efficiently of parcel and letter deliveries.”

The spokesman also said the service update web page is updated daily basis and provides a round-up of movement of mail throughout the network.
