Sarah Ferguson becomes the first British royal to join TikTok as she posts poignant first video

Sarah Ferguson has become the first member of the royal family to join TikTok – and marked the occasion with a poignant video reflecting on her cancer journey.

The Duchess of York, who currently resides in the Royal Lodge in Windsor Park, made her debut on the social media app yesterday under the username sarahtheduchess.

Sarah – who is often affectionately known as Fergie – donned a casual ensemble for the clip, consisting of a denim jacket and an aqua blue jumpsuit.

She sat down in a field to film the clip and captioned it: ‘My first ever TikTok!’

Fergie was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2023. Just months later, in January 2024, the mother-of-two was told she had malignant melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer.

The mother-of-two said she felt ‘hollow’ and experienced ‘total abject fear’ when she heard her breast cancer diagnosis.

Fergie said: ‘The drive [between hospitals] was 40 minutes and I didn’t speak – I couldn’t speak. It was very interesting for me not to speak.

‘I couldn’t express myself, I just shut down, I went back into [a] little girl. It was easier not to ask for support and just to deal with it because that’s what I’m used to, that’s what I was taught.

‘It’s only now that I am really proud of my scars, they’re really important.

‘I never thought you could free the shackles of your heart by cancer, by learning what it is to be able to talk right about what it feels like to ask for help, to surrender and to realise that everything is going to be okay. And you can find joy and you can not worry so much.’

She put in her caption: ‘One cancer diagnosis was bad enough but to go through all those emotions twice was a lot to handle. For anyone going through this now, know that you are not alone.’

The Duchess has racked up more than 2,000 views in less than a day, with fans commenting love heart emojis under her first post.

‘Mum, Granny, Bestselling Author, Creative, Founder of Sarah’s Trust,’ she stated in her bio.

Fergie also posted a QR code to her TikTok on her Instagram story to promote the account and help it gain traction.

She wrote: ‘Posted my first ever TikTok! I can’t wait to share more of my life and stories with you all,’ following a purple love heart emoji.

Fergie said that she has become an official patron for Prevent Breast Cancer, which she described as ‘an incredible organisation that is dedicated to the prediction and prevention of breast cancer’.

The Duchess, who is the former wife of Prince Andrew, celebrated her 65th birthday yesterday, alongside her daughter, Princess Beatrice.

Beatrice, who is married to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, is currently pregnant with her second child.

The 36-year-old attended a Ladies Lunch held to raise money for a cancer charity alongside her mother.

The duo were joined by celebrities including Elizabeth Hurley and Dame Joan Collins at the tenth annual Lady Garden Foundation Langan’s Ladies Lunch in London.

While she has been advised against using the phrase ‘cancer free’, Sarah, writing in The Sun last week, said that her ‘treatment has been successful and tests show there has been no spread or recurrence.’

Her other daughter, Princess Eugenie, also shared a sweet new photo of her son August with her mother Sarah Ferguson as she wished her a happy birthday.

The sweet Instagram post consisted of several photos of her mother over the years.

The carousel opened with a new picture of the duchess with Eugenie’s son August, three.

In another snap, Sarah was posed with Eugenie and her older daughter Beatrice, who recently announced she was pregnant with her second child.

Eugenie, 34, captioned her post: ‘Happy birthday to my beautiful mumma. So proud of the Grannie you are, the mum you are and the woman you are

‘You’re an inspiration and our endless chats bring me so much happiness and incredible support.’

Last week, Fergie praised the Princess of Wales for making her surprise public appearance in Southport.

Speaking to Channel 5‘s Dan Walker, she said: ‘I think the princess has done a beautiful job of really getting out there.

‘Today [was] such a brave, courageous move, and it’s just completely and utterly wonderful to see that.

‘It’ll inspire and help those poor families and that’s what we should be looking at [doing], encourage and encourage and encourage.’

The future King and Queen privately met the families of Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, who were all killed during the fatal attack.

They also spent time with dance teacher Leanne Lucas, 35, who was seriously injured as she shielded youngsters as they were attacked by a knifeman.

Afterwards, the couple spoke to emergency responders who attended and helped on the day, with the Princess hailing them ‘true heroes’, while William called them ‘true professionals’.
