Daventry protesters gather over playing field sell-off plan

Hundreds of people have gathered on a green space to oppose a draft plan to sell it off and build 150 homes.

West Northamptonshire Council has been considering whether to sell Eastern Way playing field in Daventry and use the funds for improvements in the town.

Residents have pointed out the importance of the land for exercise, dog walking and events including Daventry parkrun, and have set up a petition.

At the end of the event, one of the organisers, Liz Scott, said: “I’m absolutely amazed. A couple of hours ago, it was pouring down with rain, the wind was blowing a hurricane, but we were so determined not to give up and our supporters turned out in their hundreds.”

The council cabinet is expected to discuss the plan, as part of the Daventry Masterplan, this autumn.
