A nan claims Royal Mail has lost sentimental Christmas presents intended for her children. Marilyn Taylor sent 20 of her late husband Alastair’s ties to be made into memory bears for her son, Alex, 44, and daughter Lucy, 41.

Some of the ties were from his professional career as an accountant and a secretary. The ties, after being made into bears, were posted back to Marilyn in Devon from St Helens depot on Friday, October 11. However, it has been weeks since they were posted and the 75-year-old nan-of-two still hasn’t received them. She contacted Royal Mail and was told that the delivery had been misplaced and an investigation launched.

The mum-of-two told the ECHO: “The trail has gone cold. They were tracked items, but they have gone missing, and I will probably never get them, it seems.

“It was devastating when I found out they were lost. The bears were going to be Christmas presents, so it was heartbreaking.” The Royal Mail confirmed to the ECHO it was “actively” investigating the situation.

The spokesperson added: “Our colleagues are searching the relevant delivery offices and mail centres, as well as placing posters at our National Returns Centre. We will be in touch with the customer directly and will update them on the outcome of this search.”

Alastair died from prostate cancer in November 2022. Ten of his ties were sent for each bear, costing Marilyn £150. She added: “Alastair was a great family man and a grandad. He was so generous, kind and considerate with a lovely Scottish accent.

“He was a hard working man. Now, nothing is coming back – not the ties or the bears. They have just been lost, and there doesn’t seem to be an explanation. When I rang up the Royal Mail, a gentleman told me trying to find them would be like finding a needle in a haystack.”
