Outgoing daily mail to the United States has resumed but delays continue for items intended for other destinations, the Bermuda Post Office said.
The confirmation came after an issue with Skyport’s screening and scanning equipment caused a temporary disruption of outbound mail last week.
A BPO spokeswoman said that while scanning issues were resolved for US-bound mail, there remained a “scanning delay” for mail bound for Britain and other international destinations.
“As a contingency, the Bermuda Post Office is routing UK and other international mail through the US,” the spokeswoman said.
“This is a temporary solution until direct UK transport is restored. The BPO remains committed to meeting its international delivery standards.
“Skyport, who is responsible for the security screening function, continues to work with relevant stakeholders to resolve the UK/international mail-scanning matter.”
The BPO added that the process of receiving inbound mail has not been affected by the issue.
A Skyport spokeswoman said last week that the primary X-ray machine used for scanning outgoing mail was temporarily down because of a software update that required the manufacturer’s involvement.
The spokeswoman added that the update had been completed, and the backlog of mail was being processed at that time.
It is understood that private courier firms were not affected as they have access to their own scanning machines.
