Drivers are being warned about disruption around Stoke-on-Trent railway station as the next phase of work begins to upgrade bus, pedestrian and cycle routes.
The work is part of a £29m programme to improve the station’s connection with the city centre and enhance the surrounding area.
Paving work has already started along with a new drainage system to prevent flooding.
From Monday, car park one next to the Royal Mail sorting office will be closed until the end of June next year while works around Winton Square are carried out.
Anyone travelling to the station during that time is strongly advised to allow extra time for their journey, the council said.
During the work, the bus stop outside Federation House will be temporarily relocated to the station side of the carriageway with access to businesses along Station Road still possible.
The pedestrian crossing at Winton Square will be kept in use, and a taxi rank temporarily located outside the square.
Long-stay parking will be available at car park two, which is located at the north end of platform one, and car park three, at the rear of the station.
There will be a free 20-minute drop off at car park three and disabled parking facilities will be available at both car parks, the council said.
Leave extra time
Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, cabinet member for transport, infrastructure and regeneration, said he was delighted to see the work progressing to improve the city’s transport links.
“While this work is going on there will be some disruption and we understand that this can be frustrating for motorists, but I want to reassure everyone that it will be worth it in the end,” he said.
“This project is going to create more room for pedestrians and cyclists, it will help to reduce traffic flow around the station, improve the look of the station itself and more importantly provide us with a better connection to the city centre.
“So please bear with us and remember to leave a bit of extra time for your journey.”
