The Post Office has issued a warning that up to 115 branches could face closure, leaving many to wonder if their local branch is at risk of shutting down permanently.
The branches slated for potential closure are the last remaining ones directly owned by the Post Office, known as Crown Post Offices, and are predominantly situated in city centres. Seven of them are in Yorkshire.
In a significant statement released today, the Post Office mentioned that these branches might be handed over to retail partners or postmasters, indicating that not all may ultimately close.
With a network of 11,500 branches throughout the UK, most are operated by independent postmasters, while others are managed by retailers such as WH Smith, Tesco, Morrisons, and the Co-Op. Nigel Railton, chair of the Post Office, said: “The Post Office has a 360-year history of public service and today we want to secure that service for the future by learning from past mistakes and moving forward for the benefit of all postmasters.
“We can, and will, restore pride in working for a business with a legacy of service, rather than one of scandal. The value postmasters deliver in their communities must be reflected in their pockets, and this Transformation Plan provides a route to adding more than £250million annually to total postmaster remuneration by 2030, subject to government funding.”
Dave Ward, general secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), has slammed the company’s decision to close numerous Post Offices following the Horizon scandal, branding it as both tone-deaf and immoral. He said: “For the company to announce the closure of hundreds of Post Offices hot on the heels of the Horizon scandal is as tone deaf as it is immoral. CWU members are victims of the Horizon scandal and for them to now fear for their jobs ahead of Christmas is yet another cruel attack.”, reports the Mirror.
