It’s the weekend and therefore time for a look at the cases that have recently come before Cornwall’s magistrates. Everyone who has been charged with an offence, from the least to the most serious, appears initially before the magistrates.
The most serious cases are then sent to the crown court. If a defendant pleads guilty, they could be sentenced straight away or have the matter put back for a pre-sentence report. If they deny the allegations against them, the case will be adjourned for a trial.
The courts are open to anyone and our reporters attend just like any other member of the public. As most people have jobs and cannot spend their time in court, the media has always acted as the eyes and ears of the public to ensure that justice is seen to be done.
Here’s who has been sentenced at the magistrates’ court in Bodmin and Truro recently.
Ashley Williams
Age: 31
Of no fixed abode
On September 1 at the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske in Truro without lawful excuse, damaged a plexiglass screen which has a value of between £2,000 and £3,000 belonging to the hospital, intending to destroy or damage such property or being reckless as to whether such property would be destroyed or damaged.
On October 4 at Tesco, Wesley Street, Camborne, stole two bottles of beer to the value of £5.20 belonging to Tesco. The next day at Street Record, Fore Street, Redruth, used towards persons threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause those persons to believe that immediate unlawful violence would be used against them by any person, or to provoke the immediate use of unlawful violence by them whereby that person was likely to believe that such violence would be used, or it was likely that such violence would be provoked.
Also, on the same date, at Tesco, Wesley Street, Camborne, stole two bottles of beer, to the value of £5.80 belonging to Tesco. On October 11 at Morrisons in Illogan Highway stole two bottles of red wine belonging to Morrisons. The day before also stole an energy drink from Tesco in Camborne to a value of £3.
Remand unconditional bail until December 5.

Castle Street, Bodmin
On October 4 at Newquay Police station had with you, without good reason or lawful authority, an article that has a blade, namely a kitchen knife.
Also on the same date at Newquay, when suspected of having driven a vehicle and having been required to provide a specimen of blood for a laboratory test pursuant to section 7 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 in the course of an investigation into whether you had committed an offence under section 3A, 4, 5 or 5A thereof, failed without reasonable excuse to do so.
Remanded on conditional bail until December 6.
Colin Loss
Age: 51
South Street , St Austell
Assault a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm, contrary to section 47 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. On September 2, 2023, at St Austell assaulted a man thereby occasioning him actual bodily harm.
Compensation: £750. Custody period: 24 week suspended for 12 months. The reasons for this: vicious forceful assault, attack from behind, punched and kicked whilst on floor, loss of consciousness.
