Our entire tower block is a no-go zone for the Royal Mail – they’ve banned posties from delivering

FUMING residents have slammed Royal Mail for banning deliveries to their tower block over an alleged thug tenant and his dog.

Hundreds of locals are being forced to walk more than a mile to pick up their mail after posties were ordered not to enter the building.

All 114 flats in Clyde Tower in East Kilbride were told of the boycott earlier this month amid claims a yob tenant had threatened staff with the Rottweiler-type mutt.

People must now go down to the sorting office with photo ID between 8am and 10am.

One disabled resident said: “It’s a terrible inconvenience to myself and the other residents in the building.

“It’s incredibly frustrating, the building opposite is still getting their mail, and it feels like the whole building is being punished for the actions of one person.

“I’m disabled, so I struggle getting around as it is, now I’m having to travel to the sorting office in the town centre to get my mail.

“I’m waiting on a letter just now to confirm a time for surgery to remove a lesion from my face.

“But when I went down to the post office I was told the letter wasn’t there and that I was to come back later.

“I feel terrible for the other residents of the building as well, and of course the postmen.

“We have no idea when the situation is going to change. We’ve been left in the dark but I can only hope things change soon.”

It’s not the first time mail has been suspended at the building.

In May of this year a similar incident saw delivery to one floor of the high-rise temporarily suspended.

Another added: “My understanding is that he’s threatened the postman twice now.

“He’s threatened him with his dog, and previously chased him up and down the floors in the building. It’s disgraceful.

“I’m an NHS worker so I work 12 hour days and with the opening times of the sorting office I’m often unable to get down there to collect my mail.

“The council hasn’t offered us any help and we have no idea how long it’s going to last.

“There are multiple residents in here who have complained to the council about him before but they keep telling us they can’t do anything about it.

“There are a lot of older people in here so how can they be expected to get down to the sorting office to pick up their mail on a regular basis?

Tower residents were told they must collect their post at the Royal Mail sorting office – over a mile away – between the hours of 8am and 10am with a valid photo ID.

Royal Mail said it was forced to take “exceptional” steps in order to ensure staff safety.

A spokesman said: “We take the welfare of our posties very seriously and, where necessary, will take steps to ensure their safety.

“We will continue to assess the current exemption however, it is our priority that posties are able to carry out their duties without fear of violence.”

Craig Jardine,of South Lanarkshire Council, said: “We are aware of the situation in Clyde Tower and are conducting a robust investigation.”
