Queen Maxima is solemn as she and King Willem-Alexander visit The Hague after 6 people died in an apartment block explosion

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands appeared solemn today as she visited the wreckage of an apartment building that exploded in The Hague on Saturday.

The royal, 53, was joined by her husband King Willem-Alexander, 57, on Monday as she visited the scene of a tragic explosion in an apartment building that left at least six people dead on Saturday.

Maxima appeared sombre as she surveyed the rubble alongside her husband and a group of firefighter and other officials. 

The mother-of-three arrived in a camel coloured trench coat with a warm beige scarf wrapped snuggly beneath.

She wore a simple pair of jeans, trading her usual high heels for white trainers to visit the rubble remaining from the disaster. 

The wore her hair neatly brushed down at her sides and sported a typically smart and polished makeup look for the visit. 

The queen looked soberly towards King-Willem-Alexander as he spoke to press during their visit.

NL Times reported that the king described being ‘in complete shock’ following the tragedy.

‘It is beyond imagination. You follow what is happening minute by minute, but when you see the site, the impact of the explosion on those buildings, all those people there, I am shaking as I think of it,’ he said. 

The Dutch royals also told media outlets: ‘Our thoughts are with those affected.’

The pair were briefed by the police and firefighters before going on to speak with surviving residents and loved ones of victims.

Fundraising action across the city in hopes of support the victims, had already gathered €340,000 as of Monday morning.

As of Monday morning, six people have been found killed following the explosion that left half of the building collapsed.

The explosion at the block of flats left a path of destruction after firefighters were called to the blaze on Saturday at 6.15am local time (5.15am GMT).

Plumes of smoke could be seen from the three-storey building in the Hague on Saturday morning as firefighters battled the blaze.

As of last night, 10 people had been rescued from the rubble, four of which were taken to hospital while another was being seen to by paramedics on the scene before being taken to shelter.

It’s not currently known how many are left amongst the buildings remains though it’s thought that up to 20 people had been present at the time. Sniffer dogs are currently being employed to search for the remaining residents.

It’s not clear how the explosion happened, however Dutch Police have said a car sped away from the scene at the time of the blast.

Elite search and rescue teams, specialised in searching for victims in natural disasters and earthquakes have been sent to the scene and a large excavator has been installed at the site to help clear the debris.

Dutch Media have also reported that five flats were destroyed by the explosion.

Mayor van Zanen has previously said the chance of survivors was slim and warned the community to prepare for the ‘worst case scenario’.

He said: ‘It is not known how many people are still under the rubble. But the reality is that there is only a slim chance of survival for them.’

The sixth victim was discovered in the cellar at around 2:30am on Monday according to the Veiligheidsreio Haaglanden.

Residents described hearing a small explosion before the massive set the place ablaze. They described the impact of the blast as ‘like an earthquake’.

It comes after the Dutch royal stepped out in a monochromatic ensemble for an event on financial health in London last week.

She picked an elegant calf-length cream dress for her visit on Wednesday – one day after she addressed the Financial Times Global Banking Summit. 

Former banker Maxima put on a glamorous display as she wore a matching cape over the dress and finished the look with a pair of tan suede stilletos. 

As she stepped out of her car on a chilly morning in London, Maxima kept herself warm by adding a belted camel-coloured coat over her dress and leather gloves.

Maxima wore her hair in a simple bun and kept her makeup looking fresh and natural.

She accessorised with a pair of diamond earrings, a couple of bracelets, and a watch – with Maxima looking completely focused on her tour of what appeared to be the Mastercard offices in London.

The visit followed just a day after she spoke at the Global Banking Summit in the capital. 

Maxima, who is UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health, joined several banking CEOs for the annual summit.

The mother-of-three and former banker put on a glamorous display in a midnight blue suit, adorned with glitter and gold plated buttons.

She matched her blue suit with a set of sapphire drop earrings, an elegant watch and silver chain bracelet.

Maxima wore typically glamorous makeup with a flawless glowing base, bronze accentuated cheeks and a dark smoky eye. She finished the look with a flush of highlighter and a rose pink lip.

The queen looked polished with a deep red manicure and her dusty blonde tresses worn down at her shoulders.

During the event, the Queen chatted to keynote speaker Silvia Pavoni, editor-in-chief of the monthly publication The Banker, setting out her vision for financial health.

Alongside this mission, the queen is working to advocate for financial products, services and policies that can enable more people manage their daily income and spending, allowing them to invest their money or work towards financial goals.
