It’s safe to say the weather across the UK is freezing right now.
Some parts of the country are set to welcome snow, while others are freezing in single-digit temperatures. Nonetheless, it might be a snow storm outside but it’ll never stop our postmen/women from working hard and wearing shorts while on the job.
So have you ever wondered why they’re still in minimal clothing, even when it’s cold? According to a Reddit post, one person wondered whether it was a rule or “silly” ritual passed down which then prompted ex-workers to reveal the truth.
It read: “Postmen/woman of the UK, why do you wear shorts all year round?” Then another person on social media chimed in: “Yeah I’ve seen them all week in shorts and a Royal Mail pastel blue short sleeve shirt.”
A current worker said: “It really is just because it gets hot doing the job. One round I wear trousers just because of the wind but it’s that particular village happens to be the highest point of the town and is a massive wind tunnel. All other rounds I’m in shorts pretty much all year.”
While a second admitted: “Skin is waterproof. Walking all day is hot work.” Then a third revealed: “The depot had a running bet where everyone paid £1 a week into a pot, with the winner got to give the entire fund to a charity of their choice.
“The competition was to see who could go furthest into the winter in shorts. As the snow kicked in during January it was down to two die hards. Eventually as spring kicked in it was deemed a tie, the pot was split between the two, raising several hundred each.
“At the end of the competition a supervisor also added to the pot out of his own pocket and both got a free cooked breakfast from the work’s canteen for a week in recognition of their efforts!”
Someone else penned: “The same reason all carpet fitters wear indoor court shoes, they just do!” As a Reddit user chimed in: “Seen a few today in shorts. I admire their stealth.”
It’s safe to say the conversation has been hot topic for a number of years now. But at least you know the answer is simple – it gets hot on the job…
