It might seem odd to see them dressed for summer in single-digit temperatures, but there’s actually a reason behind this sartorial choice. Curiosity about this led to a query on Reddit, where the person wondered if it was a rule or “silly” ritual.
The post read: “Postmen/woman of the UK, why do you wear shorts all year round?” This prompted responses from Royal Mail workers themselves. One explained: “It really is just because it gets hot doing the job.”
Another worker shared: “One round I wear trousers just because of the wind but it’s that particular village happens to be the highest point of the town and is a massive wind tunnel. All other rounds I’m in shorts pretty much all year.”
A third chimed in with a practical perspective: “Skin is waterproof. Walking all day is hot work.” Additionally, a unique tradition at the depot was disclosed by another employee.
They said: “The depot had a running bet where everyone paid £1 a week into a pot, with the winner got to give the entire fund to a charity of their choice.
“The contest was all about who could brave the cold in shorts the longest into winter. As January’s snow began, only two stalwarts remained.
“When spring finally arrived, it ended in a draw, with both contestants splitting the pot and raising several hundred pounds each. At the end of the competition a supervisor also added to the pot out of his own pocket and both got a free cooked breakfast from the work’s canteen for a week in recognition of their efforts!”
Another added: “The same reason all carpet fitters wear indoor court shoes, they just do!” Meanwhile, a Reddit user noted: “Seen a few today in shorts. I admire their stealth.”
