Chelsea owner Todd Boehly lines up ‘bargain’ as talks advance

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Chelsea owner Todd Boehly believes there is a “bargain to be had” as he eyes investment in The Telegraph newspaper.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested buying into the media “could come back to haunt” the US billionaire, who has been a controversial figure in the UK since his investment at Stamford Bridge.

According to the Financial Times (9 December), Boehly is threatening to gatecrash the £550million sale of The Telegraph with an offer to help finance a bid for the “conservative” national newspaper.

The report claims he has held talks in recent weeks about the possibility of becoming involved in the deal.

Boehly, alongside Clearlake Capital, took over at Chelsea in 2022 and also owns a 20% stake in baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Blues are in the Premier League title race this term after mammoth transfer spending since the takeover.

Telegraph investment ‘could come back to haunt’ Chelsea owner Boehly, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “He’s got the bug, he likes the British side of business.

“As with Daniel Kretinsky, who has just closed on buying the Royal Mail, a number of people in football believe there are bargains to be had in the UK.

“Whether that’s true, we’ll have to wait and see.

“The Telegraph and buying into the media is a very difficult game, and it can come back to haunt you. I hope he’s got good partners in this.

“Given it is more on the right-wing side, that’s probably where these private equity boys would like to be.

“It’ll be interesting.”
