Princess Charlotte could get Princess Anne’s key title after ‘royal crash course’

Princess Charlotte has reportedly been getting a ‘royal crash course’ from Princess Anne – and could eventually take her title. The nine-year-old has made a number of public appearances in recent months, including a notable Wimbledon visit with mum Kate Middleton.

Her great aunt Princess Anne was once again crowned the hardest-working royal of 2024 having completed 217 engagements – 31 more than her brother King Charles. Royal insiders claim Anne is now ‘training’ young Charlotte in the art of royalty.

A source told Woman magazine: “Anne’s ‘training’, if you will, isn’t just about rank, file, and curtsies either. She’s shown her how to spark conversations, but also how to end one and move on without upsetting anyone.

“That was a tough one for Kate to learn, but Charlotte was born to royalty so is used to the subtle signals and messaging the royals give to stay in control of a situation.” There has been speculation over whether Charlotte might one day receive the title of Princess Royal when her dad Prince William ascends the throne, Mirror reports.

The title is usually offered to the monarch’s eldest daughter. The special title is not handed over by default – even Anne waited until 1987 before she was handed the honour, leaving it in William’s hands to decide Charlotte’s future title.

Daily Mail Diary Editor Richard Eden, speaking on the Palace Confidential podcast, said: “Traditionally the Princess Royal would be the eldest daughter of the monarch so when William becomes king, it is likely that Princess Charlotte, if Princess Anne is dead, may be our future Princess Royal.” He said Charlotte could decline the role.

Richard said: “Yeah, she could do, who knows. Who knows what the future holds but that has been the tradition in the past that it is the eldest daughter of the monarch.”

He noted that Queen Elizabeth II never held the title because her aunt Princess Mary had the title after outliving King George VI. The title of Princess Royal dates back to the 1600s.

It is thought to have been inspired by the French “Madame Royale” for the unmarried daughters of the king.
