Royal Mail Delivery Office, in Church Street, Hadleigh, set to undergo ‘overdue’ refurbishment

Plans to restore the character of a postal delivery building have been approved.

The Royal Mail Delivery Office, in Church Street, Hadleigh, is set to undergo an ‘overdue’ refurbishment, which includes replacing broken roof tiles, bargeboards and fascias as well as repairing and repainting the existing windows and internal doors.

The wall at the rear of the Grade-II listed building will be demolished and rebuilt.

The planning application said the Royal Mail hopes to bring back a more traditional appearance by removing deteriorated materials and replacing them with like-for-like materials.

It added: “The rear boundary wall, currently in disrepair and leaning, will be removed and rebuilt using materials that match the existing and surrounding boundary walls.”

The plans, which were first submitted to Babergh District Council in August and given the go-ahead yesterday, were also welcomed by The Hadleigh Society.

Richard Fletcher, chairman and secretary, said: “The proposed repairs to windows and replacement of damaged bricks, roofing and the yard brick wall are all to be welcomed subject to use of appropriate replacement materials.”

The works will not impact the current opening hours.
