Several warnings have been sent out to postcodes alerting them to the backlog of post.

The delay was sparked by a failure to send out mail over the weekend due to bad weather.

Snow and ice blasting parts of the UK has prevented mail from being delivered on time.

The winter weather has also seen other offices hammered by staff illnesses – meaning fewer postal workers are on shift.

The failure to keep up with the schedule has led to delays at 14 centres.

These include Gatwick, London Central, Manchester, Preston, and the South Midlands.

Two areas north of the border have been issued with disruption alerts after they were hit by staff shortages due to workers being off sick.

People in Glasgow’s G52 and G53 postcodes have been told to expect delays with their post.

Increased delivery times have also hit the G78 postcode in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire.

The Royal Mail said on its website: “The mail centres below reported not all mail was processed or despatched to schedule over the past weekend.

“As a result, some mail may be delivered later than planned.”

Royal Mail delivers the post every day of the week except Sundays.

First-class mail is delivered the day after dispatch while second-class mail is delivered two days after.

But they run a complex system where just one setback could spark massive delays.

This could be disruption to mail centers, air mail, road, rail, or local factors could also play a role.
