Oldham Hospital nurse fighting for life after being stabbed in ‘attempted murder’ | UK | News

A nurse was left in a critical condition after being stabbed at a hospital in Greater Manchester.

A man is being held on suspicion of attempted murder following the shocking incident at the Royal Oldham Hospital, which happened at around 11.30pm last night (Saturday). The stabbing, it has been claimed, was prompted by the attacker becoming angry at having to wait to be seen at the hospital’s A&E department, the MailOnline reports.

The news outlet reported one person described as a witness claiming there was a “row with a patient”. The source claimed: “It’s terrible – there was a row with a patient. I think they became angry because they had to wait to be seen. It’s scary.”

Speaking about the victim of the attack, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: “It’s believed that a member of the public attacked a member of staff.”

The victim, a woman in her 50s, remains in hospital for treatment for her injuries, which are believed to be “life-changing”, the force said.

Manchester Evening News reports that the attack happened in the A&E department of the hospital and that the victim, a nurse, was attacked with a “sharp instrument” that wasn’t a knife.

A 37-year-old man was “swiftly arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder”, GMP said. He remains in custody for questioning.

Whilst this investigation is in the early stages, the force are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

GMP assured locals that they “do not believe there to be a threat to the wider public”, adding that their thoughts are with the nurse’s family and colleagues.

Detective Sergeant Craig Roters, from Greater Manchester Police’s Oldham district, acknowledged that “news of this nature will come as a shock” to the local community.

He said: “This is a serious incident which has left a woman in a critical condition.

“Our thoughts are with her family and colleagues, and we will continue to support them throughout this investigation.

“The local community can expect to see an increase in police presence whilst we carry out enquiries, but they are also there to offer reassurance and answer any questions you may have. We know that news of this nature will come as a shock, and if you have any concerns or anything you would like to share, please speak to them.”

The MP for Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton has called the stabbing of a Royal Oldham Hospital worker a “senseless attack” and wished her a full recovery.

Jim McMahon, who is also local government minister, posted on Facebook saying: “We are all shocked at the senseless attack on a nurse in the A&E department of the Royal Oldham Hospital.

“Our thoughts are with the nurse, family and friends as we wish a full recovery.”
