Closures in place on Greater Manchester motorway to last three weeks

Closures on a major Greater Manchester motorway are set to last for three weeks. Barrier repairs on the M602 near Eccles will take place overnight between January 21 and February 12.

Highways North West said that the ‘essential’ works will be carried out to replace sections of the safety barrier in the central reservation and along the roadside in both directions.

The works will be undertaken overnight from Monday to Friday, from 9pm to 5am and occasionally on Saturdays, which will run until 7am, between junctions two and three.

The motorway will remain open but there will be lane closures in place meaning the carriageway will be opened at a reduced capacity.

An update from the Highways North West read: “We’re carrying out essential safety barrier improvements on the M602 between junction 2 (Eccles) and 3 (Ordsall).

“Our work involves replacing sections of safety barrier in the central reservation and along the roadside in both directions.

“We’re keeping disruption to a minimum by working at night when traffic levels are lower and under lane closures. This means the motorway remains open but at a reduced capacity.

“Our work starts on Tuesday 21 January and is planned to finish on Wednesday 12 February 2025. We’ll work overnight Monday to Friday and occasionally Saturday, from 9pm to 5am (extended to 7am on weekends).

“The repairs aim to improve safety for drivers by reducing the risk of vehicle crossover. There’ll also be less disruption with not as much maintenance work or road closures needed in future. However, our work will create some noise. We’d like to apologise for any disturbance this may cause.”
