Royal, as it turns out, is the king of NSW pub names.
The most popular names have been revealed in new data from Liquor & Gaming NSW.
It shows that 73 out of 2112 licensed hotels share ‘Royal’ in their names; 12 in metropolitan hubs and 51 spread across regional NSW.
Variations such as Royal Oak, Royal Exchange, and Royal Mail bring the total number of ‘Royal’-named pubs to 111.
The late 1950s marked the golden age of the Royal Hotel name; 43 new venues licensed with this name between 1958 and 1960, according to government.
Commercial Hotel takes second place with 34 pubs across NSW and Railway Hotel was third with 20 pubs.
These pubs emerged alongside the NSW rail network as the venues provided rest and refreshments for travellers and railway workers.
Minister for Gaming and Racing David Harris says “Royal Hotel” remains the most popular pub name in NSW since the last data report issued five years ago.
“Its enduring popularity dates back to the mid-1900s, a nod to Australia’s deep historical and cultural connections to the UK,” he says.
“Pub names are more than a simple sign on a building; they are windows into our history, with the names a reflection of the industries, traditions, and people that have shaped our state.
“Our local venues provide much more than just a place to share a meal or a drink – they are key employers and valuable contributors to local economies, particularly in regional areas.
“While the world around us continues to change, pubs remain a cornerstone of Australian life.
“Their names serve as reminders of our past and the vital role these venues continue to play in bringing people together and strengthening communities.”
Historically, the term “hotel” was used for many pubs due to early liquor licensing laws, which required these establishments offer accommodation as well as alcohol on premises.
