Don’t let the budget-friendly property prices in Saltcoats fool you, though. It’s a far more pleasant place to live than what you might expect given the bargain rates, reports the Daily Record.
Situated on the stunning Irvine Bay coastline southwest of Glasgow, it boasts golden sandy beaches and striking Victorian architecture. The town’s name pays homage to its earliest industry, salt harvesting.
Additionally, a charming harbour dating back to the 17th century, where fossilised trees can be seen at low tide, serves as a reminder of the once thriving port. The price of a home in Saltcoats is significantly below the national average of £373,493. This figure is more than 10 times the average UK yearly wage of £35,464, according to government data published in October.
Rightmove reveals that the 10 cheapest seaside towns for buying a house are located in the north of the UK. The priciest of these, with an average cost of £146,674, is Hartlepool in County Durham.
County Durham features three times on this list, with Easington and Peterlee taking the second and third cheapest spots. Meanwhile, Ashington in Northumberland follows closely with an average price tag of £132,660.
Over in the Northwest, Bootle in Merseyside boasts an average house price of just £133,197. Elsewhere, Maryport and Workington in Cumbria hover around the £141,000 mark.
As expected, the 10 most expensive seaside locations are in the south of the UK. Sandbanks in Dorset clinched the top spot, with an average price of £1.58 million.
