Six arrested after man spotted with gun as armed police swarm scene

Six people have been arrested after a man was spotted with a handgun. At around 2.55pm on Monday (January 27) armed officers from Merseyside Police swarmed Brownlow Hill.

Five men and one woman have been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm following the incident and remain in police custody to be questioned. Enquiries are ongoing and the firearms incident has been stood down, police confirmed.

A large police cordon was put in place this afternoon following the incident, closing a section of Brownlow Hill at the junction of Great Newton Street.

Armed police were spotted at the scene and enquiries appeared to be ongoing in an alleyway behind a row of houses. Photos show multiple police vehicles at the scene and a cordon in place outside Liverpool John Moores University’s School of Art and Design.

One man, who lives inside the cordon on Great Newton Street, told the ECHO how he was watching TV and saw all the blue flashing lights through his window from the emergency service vehicles.

He said: “I don’t know what’s happened, I’m just going to walk my dog.” Students from the nearby universities were also seen at the cordon as police cordoned off the road.
