The Royal Oak pub applies for permission to expand

Amy Gadney has asked to extend The Royal Oak in Ramsden, make changes to the internal layout and to convert the stables into an events space for multi functional and community use.

The proposals include reducing the bar, providing two new guest bedrooms through a new ‘hidden’ bedroom and new accommodation building and increasing the kitchen size with an extension.

The application submitted to West Oxfordshire District Council is also for changes to the main courtyard, external dining and car park.

The Grade II-listed building has functioned as a coaching inn or pub for nearly 250 years and lies within the village Conservation Area.

The application says the pub underwent a high-quality restoration and refurbishment in 2020 but “significant constraints in the current set up” are “restricting its future viability”.

A heritage statement says the proposals have been “sensitively designed” and “would not cause harm to the significance of the listed building or the character and appearance of the Ramsden Conservation Area, while offering some benefits”.

The pub was bought in 2019 by villagers Ms Gadney and producer Tim Bevan, co-founder of Working Title Films whose many hits include Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bridget Jones’s Diary.

In 2023 the pub made The Sunday Times list of 100 Best Places to Stay in Britain and in 2024 it was nominated for ‘best sustainable pub’ at the prestigious Great British Pub Awards.
