Justice Minister condemns attacks on police officers

JUSTICE Minister, Naomi Long, has condemned attacks on police officers at the weekend.

Nine police officers were injured over a 48-hour period in the Derry City and Strabane policing district.

Officers were punched in the face, kicked in the head, head-butted, spat at with blood and one officer was left with a sprained wrist.

The incidents occurred between Friday, February 7 and Sunday, February 9, and in some cases the officers also endured “racial and sectarian abuse”, the PSNI said.

Minister Long said: “I unreservedly condemn these disgraceful attacks on police officers in Strabane and Derry this weekend.

“The Police are here to serve us all and keep us safe.

“It is appalling that they would be attacked during the course of their duties.

“There is no place in our society for such actions and those responsible will be pursued and brought to justice.

“I commend the PSNI and thank them for continuing to serve in such challenging circumstances.

“I send my thoughts and best wishes to the officers who were injured and I hope they make a speedy recovery.”
