A drunken son brutally attacked his own mother, burned her with hot oil and bit her during a violent outburst in her own home.
Edward Castor refused to leave his mother’s Newcastle home after she asked him to leave when he began verbally abusing her after a day of drinking booze. The 22-year-old soon turned violent and assaulted her before heading into the kitchen and throwing frying bacon at her. His mother sustained burns to her face from the “scalding” oil.
The thug, who was subject to a restraining order at the time after assaulting and spitting on his mother last year, also caused nearly £2,000-worth of damage to her home during the incident by smashing up possessions. When police turned up, Castor then kicked and attempted to bite one officer and headbutted another by throwing his head backwards.
Castor, of Lowbiggin, in Newbiggin Hall, appeared at Newcastle’s Moot Hall on Friday via link from HMP Durham to be sentenced for assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage, breaching a restraining order and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker by beating. He had pleaded guilty to the offences.
The court heard that on January 20 this year Castor’s mother returned to her home to find her son drunk. Antonia Adie, prosecuting, said that Castor began arguing with his mum as he got “more drunk” and told her he would “kill” her if she called police.
Ms Adie said: “That evening she requested him to leave. He refused and was said to ‘kick-off’. He became violent and began smashing things up and shouting abuse.
“He grabbed her and threw her around, calling her a dirty cow. He then went into the kitchen where she had been cooking bacon, he threw the bacon, the oil was scalding, and it hit her and caused a burn to her face. He was headbutting her with full force.”
The court heard that during the vicious attack, Castor “latched-on” to his mother and bit her arm and wrist. He also pushed her to the floor before he went upstairs and began smashing up belongings with a hammer. Ms Adie said he caused £1,910 worth of damage and left the victim with injuries.
When police arrived at the home, he lashed-out at the two officers and was taken to the floor as he was “flailing around”. He kicked out, hitting them, and also threw his head back and hit another officer in the jaw. As he continued to resist arrest, the officers resorted to using pepper-spray to subdue him. The court was told Castor had four previous convictions for eight offences, including assault and criminal damage which was also committed against his mother.
Jamie Adams, defending, said Castor was “immature” for his age. He told the court: “It is obvious to me [during a meeting] he was anything but lacking in remorse for the way he behaved. He expresses a lot of shame about the way he has been behaving. He is regretful and remorseful.” Mr Adams said that Castor has been “applying his mind” whilst on remand in custody and “wants to change”.
Recorder Richard Herrmann said Castor’s mum’s life has been “blighted” by his behaviour and that he carried out a “rampage” through her home. Castor was made subject of a new, three year restraining order and was jailed for 17 months.
