‘A big moment for Stoke-on-Trent’ – Council back Goodwin plan to create 100 jobs

An engineering firm has been granted planning permission for two new production units – creating up to 100 jobs. Goodwin International, a subsidiary company of the Hanley-based Goodwin Group, is set to build the units at Newstead Industrial Estate.

The group, which currently employs 400 staff at the site, says the development represents a huge opportunity and will support young people through their apprenticeship scheme.

Applicant Paul Root told Stoke-on-Trent City Council planning committee: “We’re really excited about this development at Goodwin, it’s a big moment for us as a company but equally it’s a big moment for Stoke-on-Trent. This investment represents a huge opportunity for us as a company and equally a huge opportunity for the young people of this city as we go forward.

“We’re really proud of what we’ve achieved as a company during our long-standing tenure in Stoke-on-Trent and with your support as we expand operations across the city we hope to reach even greater heights in the coming years.

“We’re really excited about what this potential development will bring to Stoke-on-Trent. Your support will be a support for the regeneration of the area, support for local jobs, and support for our young people.”

The development includes 260 parking spaces.

The committee backed the scheme – with six votes in favour and one against.

Councillor Laura Carter said: “ I’m particularly pleased with the jobs it’s going to create and the impact it’ll have on the city’s economy. I think it’s a great thing for the city.”
