UK tax authority HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has signed up to use Whistl’s Fuel Carbon Calculator in a bid to reduce the carbon impact of the collection and trunking of its bulk mail.
By using the Fuel Carbon Calculator, HMRC will establish the number of liters of fuel used to transport its mail, and then calculate how it could reduce CO2 emissions by using hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) rather than diesel.
According to Whistl, both parties will benefit from the initiative as they can reduce their carbon emissions: Whistl by using HVO to reduce the CO2 it generates and HMRC by reducing its CO2 impact under Scope 3 reporting.
Nick Wells, executive chairman of Whistl, explained, “Using our innovative tool, large-volume mailers such as HMRC can reduce the CO2 emissions in their supply chain. We are delighted that they have joined us on this important journey of reducing our impact on the environment and helping us both make progress on reaching our individual net zero goals.”
The Fuel Carbon Calculator was launched in August 2024 and is the first of its kind in the downstream access bulk mail sector, according to Whistl.
