Two people have been arrested following the fatal shooting of a man in the County Durham, the police have said. The pair are currently being held on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, following the deadly shooting incident on Saturday evening.

Police were called to an address on Elm Street, Stanley, County Durham, around 5.20pm on Saturday, following reports of a “disturbance”. Upon arrival, they discovered a 60-year-old man who had been shot.

Despite paramedics’ best efforts, he was declared dead at the scene, police confirmed. Local residents in Stanley described the apparent shooting as “terrifying,” with a neighbour a few doors down adding: “I never thought I would experience anything like this. I want to move out, I don’t want to be here.”

A police investigation was immediately launched, and by Sunday, Durham Constabulary officers had arrested a 37-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. The suspects are currently being held in custody.

A cordon remains in place at the crime scene as investigations continue. The deceased man’s family has been notified and is receiving support from specially trained officers, police confirmed.

Detective Superintendent Neil Fuller, the senior investigating officer from Durham Constabulary, said: “Our officers are carrying out extensive inquiries and I am grateful for the support and co-operation we have received from the community so far.”

He added: “I would urge anyone who has yet to get in touch with us to do so. Please don’t assume we already know. All relevant lines of inquiry will be explored.

“Our thoughts remain with the man’s family at this time.”

Durham Constabulary is urging anyone with information to contact them on 101, or dial 999 in an emergency, quoting incident number 302 of April 5.
