Royal Mail is under pressure to explain its performance after failing to meet delivery targets in the SN postcode area, where nearly one in five first-class letters arrived late.
New figures show that just 75.2% of first-class mail was delivered on time—well below the 93% target set by Royal Mail. The shortfall has prompted Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Gibson to demand urgent intervention from the regulator, Ofcom.
Sarah Gibson, who represents Chippenham, Calne, Corsham, Lyneham and Royal Wootton Bassett, accused Royal Mail of “failing people here in our constituency.”
“These missed targets are shocking and are leaving countless people in the lurch here in our part of Wiltshire,” Gibson said. “People rely on these deliveries and having them arrive on time to go about their lives and should not be forced to put up with this disruption.”
She added: “This saga has been going on for far too long and people are rightly sick to the back teeth of it. It is time Ofcom stepped in to act on these unacceptable delays and hold this failing service accountable for letting people down here in Wiltshire.”
“I will continue to do everything in my power to pressure Royal Mail into finally turning this around so people in our area can finally get the service they expect and deserve.”
Gibson’s intervention follows a series of complaints from residents and small businesses in the area, with delays reportedly affecting everything from hospital appointment letters to parcel deliveries for local traders.
The Liberal Democrats are now calling for increased transparency and tougher oversight of Royal Mail’s performance, warning that without stricter regulation, service standards could continue to fall.
