Large fire destroys orchard and open land prompting ‘arson fears’

A large fire has destroyed an orchard and damaged open land.

The blaze broke out at Bulmershe Park in Earley on Tuesday, July 8, around 4.53pm, prompting a response from multiple fire crews.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 4.53pm on Tuesday, 8 July, we received reports of a fire in the open at Bulmershe Park in Earley.

“Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Caversham Road, Wokingham Road and Whitley Wood fire stations were sent to the scene alongside a 4×4 from Crowthorne Community Fire Station.

“Upon arrival, crews discovered a large fire in the open.

“Firefighters used three hose reels to extinguish the fire.

“Crews were at the scene for approximately one hour and 20 minutes.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but concerns have been raised about the possibility of arson or accidental ignition.

A spokesperson from Environmental conservation organisation group Friends of Bulmershe Open Space said: “Hopefully it was not arson and was just carelessness with a cigarette or a discarded glass bottle.

“With the heat and drought conditions we are experiencing, the whole open space is very much at risk.”

Residents and visitors are being urged to stay vigilant.
