Lewes MP slams Royal Mail for scrapping Saturday post

The decision from the communications regulator has drawn sharp criticism from Lewes MP James MacCleary, who accused Ofcom of “letting Royal Mail off the hook” and warned the move will worsen delays for residents.

Mr MacCleary said: “This decision will leave countless people in the lurch here in Seaford, Lewes, Newhaven, Polegate, and our local villages.

“My inbox is full of people who are sick to the back teeth of delays to their post and now Ofcom is letting Royal Mail off the hook.”

He stressed that the decision undermines the work of postal staff and called for greater accountability at the top levels of Royal Mail.

Mr MacCleary said: “Local posties do a fantastic job even in the face of leadership that is failing them but instead of giving those at the top a free pass the regulator should step in and hold those that run it properly accountable.

“This approach does nothing but make these delays seem acceptable and that everyone fed up with them should just grin and bear it.

“That is not right and I will not stop fighting until this service is brought up to the standard that people here in the Lewes constituency expect and deserve.”

Ofcom announced the changes on July 10, confirming that Royal Mail would no longer be required to deliver second-class post on Saturdays.
