A flight bound for Birmingham Airport was forced to divert to East Midlands Airport after an emergency was declared.

The TUI flight was redirected to East Midlands Airport after a punctured tyre on the jet was reportedly detected. A spokesperson has confirmed the flight has since landed safely at the Castle Donington airport.

They added all passengers disembarked safely from the aircraft, but this incident has allegedly meant other flights have been unable to take off or land at the airport.

East Midlands published a statement on X at 2.28pm today (July 28) which read: “We have accepted a diverted TUI aircraft from Birmingham Airport after it declared an emergency with a punctured tyre.

“It has landed safely, and all passengers have disembarked, but it is currently preventing other aircraft from taking off or landing on our runway.

“We are working to resolve this as quickly as possible and ask passengers arriving or departing from East Midlands this afternoon for their patience,” NottinghamshireLive reported.

East Midlands’ website has since updated, with it appearing to show a number of arrivals and departures seemingly delayed several hours.

In the last hour, at around 2.52pm Inrix traffic and travel service reported four planes heading for East Midlands Airport had allegedly been diverted to Birmingham Airport.

Its update read: “Live flight data shows arriving planes circling away from the airport and no departures can currently take off until the plane on the runway is moved.

“Four planes have now been diverted to Birmingham. Check your flight before travelling to the airport,” LeicestershireLive reported.

Just over 10 minutes ago (3.21pm) it was also claimed by the travel service the plane which had made its diversion to the airport has since been “moved.”

The statement said: “Live flight data shows the plane has now moved but flights have not yet resumed.

“Some arrivals have been diverted. Check your flight before travelling to the airport.”
