Thai Army rejects Cambodian abuse claims, affirms adherence to international law

Following ceasefire tensions, the Royal Thai Army refutes allegations of mistreating detained Cambodian soldiers and invites international observers, including the ICRC, to inspect detention conditions under legal protocols.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Thai Army has dismissed allegations made by Cambodia claiming Thai troops mistreated detained Cambodian soldiers following a ceasefire along the Thai–Cambodian border. Royal Thai Army Spokesperson Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree issued a formal statement on Saturday (August 2) rejecting the claims and asserting that all actions taken by Thai forces have adhered to international law.

According to Maj Gen Winthai, while a ceasefire was announced, tensions in the border area remain unresolved, and sporadic armed activity continues. In such conditions, temporary detention of combatants is still permitted under international legal frameworks, including the Geneva Conventions. The Thai military maintains that the procedures used in handling detainees meet all applicable standards of conduct.

The Royal Thai Army has expressed readiness to allow international organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to visit and inspect the holding conditions of captured Cambodian personnel. Officials reaffirmed that such visits must follow legal protocols and can include representatives from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights if requested.

Thailand maintains that the allegations are an attempt to misrepresent the situation and discredit Thai forces. The army reiterated its position that its operations are in line with international humanitarian standards and are carried out with transparency and accountability. (NNT)
