The King is in the town marking the formal celebration of Barrow being granted Royal status for its port.
Many events are taking place as part of the day of celebration, with road closures also in place.
Here are all the closures locals need to be aware of today. Live coverage of the day can be followed here.
Barrow road closures today for King Charles’ visit to town
As shared by Westmorland and Furness Council, the roads that will be shut for the visit today are:
- Cornwallis Street
- Lawson Street
- Market Street (from Schneider Square to Cavendish Street)
- Duke Street from Schneider Square to Cavendish Street)
The closures will remain in place until 6pm this evening, September 22.
Market Street Car Park is closed to vehicles for the duration of the event, but will remain open as a pedestrian access point.
It is also important to note that Barrow Town Hall will be closed to staff and the public until 6pm this evening, too.
Why is the King visiting Barrow?
King Charles’ visit to the town marks the formal celebration of Barrow being granted Royal status for its port, which was announced in March.
The royal status is for the Port of Barrow and not the whole town; however, a mark of Royal favour for the whole of Barrow will also be given, a Government spokesman said.
The royal title can be given for a number of reasons.

Barrow is being recognised for its contribution to national security as the home of nuclear submarine building in the UK.
A free public event celebrating the visit will take place throughout today, with an exciting programme of activities.
There will be a performance from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, as well as a range of free street entertainment and games such as face painting, stilt walkers, a drumming band, and hook-a-duck.
