Hundreds of new Royal Mail jobs announced in Wales

Royal Mail will be recruiting thousands of seasonal workers – with 600 positions on offer in Wales

Royal Mail has announced plans to recruit 20,000 temporary workers across the UK in preparation for the busy Christmas period, as it gears up to handle a significant increase in parcels and mail.

The company said the seasonal roles will support the transport, sorting, and delivery of millions of items expected over the festive season, including during peak shopping days such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The majority of the temporary positions will be in mail centres and parcel hubs across the country.

In total, Royal Mail is advertising 12,000 mail centre sorting roles in England, 2,000 in Scotland, 600 in Wales, and 400 in Northern Ireland.

The seasonal workforce will operate across two main parcel hubs, four dedicated seasonal parcel sort centres, and 37 regional mail centres. A wide range of shifts will be available to accommodate different schedules.

To support the seasonal surge, Royal Mail has also expanded its operational space by 118,000 square metres, equivalent to 16.5 football pitches, across temporary parcel centres in Atherstone, Milton Keynes, Northampton, and Daventry.

These facilities will handle a large portion of online shopping orders before parcels are distributed to over 1,200 Royal Mail delivery offices nationwide.

In addition to sorting roles, Royal Mail is also recruiting 3,000 delivery and collection workers, and 2,000 drivers for heavy goods (HGV) and medium goods vehicles (MGV). For the biggest stories in Wales first, sign up to our daily newsletter here

“As we do every year, we will be pulling out all the stops to make Christmas special for our customers,” said Jamie Stephenson, Royal Mail’s interim chief operating officer.

“It’s the busiest time for us, and we work tirelessly behind the scenes – planning months in advance – to ensure everything runs smoothly.

“From delivering festive parcels to supporting online shopping, we’re investing heavily in extra resources, including thousands of seasonal team members, to help make sure every delivery arrives on time and with care.”

The temporary roles will run from late October through early January 2026, with demand peaking in December. Parcelforce Worldwide, a Royal Mail Group subsidiary, is also hiring additional drivers and indoor workers.

Royal Mail is encouraging people from all walks of life to apply, including those looking to earn extra income over the holiday season.

No prior experience is necessary, and the roles offer competitive pay, flexible shifts, and the potential for longer-term opportunities.

Applications for seasonal roles can be submitted through the Royal Mail careers website.

Supermarket chain Aldi is also looking to hire workers over the Christmas period.

They have announced a major recruitment drive for 200 new workers in Wales.
