Tropical storms thousands of miles away could impact us
Brits should brace for a weekend of particularly miserable weather this weekend as two tropical storms track across the Atlantic.
From Friday through to Saturday meteorologists at the Met Office anticipate that former hurricanes Humberto and Imelda could deliver “wet and windy conditions” across much of the country.
The national weather service has cautioned that weather warnings may be issued in the lead-up to the weekend. Currently, the forecast for the South West this weekend reads: “Rain clears east early Friday, bringing a brief dry and brighter spell. Turning unsettled overnight with heavy rain and gales. Blustery showers follow through Saturday and Sunday, these locally heavy.”
However the ex-hurricanes could worsen these conditions with possible torrential downpours and damaging winds.
Hurricane Humberto is positioned south of Bermuda and has intensified in recent days to reach major category 5 status. The storm is anticipated to deliver destructive winds to the island.
Tracking remarkably close behind Humberto, a second tropical disturbance dubbed Imelda has developed, which forecasters predict will also intensify into hurricane strength as it progresses north of the Bahamas.
Whilst Humberto will have weakened from hurricane intensity by week’s end as it approaches Britain, it is still projected to bring disruptive conditions to our coastline, reports North Wales Live.
During his BBC Breakfast segment, weather presenter Matt Taylor warned of the potential impact of ex-Hurricane Humberto on UK weather.
“It is going to weaken further and fragment into a wider area of low pressure. But as it starts to head towards us across the Atlantic it could re-strengthen again and create quite a deep and potent area of low pressure,” he said.
He also cautioned that heavy rain could sweep across the country, accompanied by potentially disruptive winds, and advised viewers to keep an eye on the forecast over the coming days.
The Met Office also acknowledged the uncertainty introduced by these ex-tropical cyclones into their forecasts.
Deputy chief meteorologist Chris Bulmer explained: “The situation becomes more complex later in the week as tropical cyclones Humberto and Imelda, currently over the southwest Atlantic, influence our weather, increasing the risk of a deep low developing near the UK.
“If this materialises, we could see some very strong winds as well as further heavy rainfall Friday into Saturday, but at this time the development and track of this system remains uncertain. We’re monitoring this closely.”
As the situation unfolds, there’s a possibility that the Met Office may issue weather warnings across the country.
